On Visiting Chungkai War Cemetery, Thailand
It seemed a fitting testament to death:
a peaceful haven, green with birdsong, where
the heat was drenched with scent; the dreaming breath
of perfumed flowers embalming sunlit air.
The sounds of war were sixty years away,
but row on row of graves affirmed their truth
and stood in silent witness to convey
their names, those lost battalions of youth.
It might have been a time for sad surmise,
except that every bloom on shrub and tree
was host to myriad painted butterflies;
a multitude in vibrant company.
The more I looked, the more that quiet ground
embodied hope – and something more profound.
